Summary of Position:
This position is responsible for undertaking field and office work, related to geotechnical investigation and Terrain Stability Assessment activities. Duties will include some field supervision of geotechnical drilling/sampling, operation of a UTV mounted drill rig and hand auger drilling for geotechnical investigations, soil/bedrock sample review, laboratory testing, set up of instrumentation and collection of site data. One of the primary duties will be to conduct Terrain Stability Field Assessments under supervision of a senior Geoscientist. This entails field reconnaissance of often remote areas with potentially difficult access and terrain conditions. The junior engineer/geoscientist will also assist with computer modelling (Slope stability and settlement analysis) to support senior individuals with their projects.
Accountabilities:
- Field logging and supervision using UTV Mounted Drill Rig in the field for soil sampling.
- Operation of Hand Auger for targeted soil sampling (if required).
- Field logging and supervision of third-party subcontractors for geotechnical investigations.
- Assisting as a representative on site for settlement monitoring projects.
- Undertake site visits, as required to assess drilling equipment access to planned borehole locations and field measurement/checkups of instrumentation.
- Perform installation of geotechnical instrumentation and assist with data analysis.
- Terrain Stability Field Assessments.
- Data entry and documentation quality control.
- Assisting with proposals, reports and field planning in the office setting.
- Assisting with Computer modelling – Slope Stability, Settlement analysis and Pile loading analysis.
- Assist with project coordination and management.
- Technical review of geotechnical reports and interpretation of information for others.
- Meeting project deadlines and quality requirements.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering Degree or Geology, with an interest in the geological/geotechnical engineering specialization.
- Working towards or currently holds registration as an Engineer-in-Training, Geologist-in-Training (E.I.T/G.I.T) in Alberta (APEGA)
- An excellent communicator and team player, able to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment with a positive attitude.
- Detail oriented, meticulous, and have strong organizational skills.
- Willingness to learn and take additional responsibilities.
- Has a current Driver’s license and supply a clean drivers abstract.
- Willing to supply a Negative 12 panel Drug and Alcohol test upon hire.
- An interest in the outdoors and is physically fit.
- Willing to drive UTVs
- Willingness to lodge in camps or trailers during field work.
